Recruiting Generation Y to Mary Kay
Mary Kay sales directors are having problems recruiting Generation Y women into the pink cult.
The reasons are obvious. Sure, they’re going to recruit some younger women who admire the Dacias and the Allisons and want to “have it all” just like they do.
But the bulk of Generation Y women are very tech savvy. What does that mean? Many of them are not going to make a decision about Mary Kay without doing an internet search on it.
And that’s where I hope Pink Truth will continue to be a bigger and bigger force against the Pink Monster. You see, I usually get at least 2 or 3 emails a week from women who were planning on signing up for MK, but changed their minds after reading PT. Not a big number, you say? Well I can only imagine how many others have had the same decision process bug just didn’t send me an email to notify me!
It is no longer so easy to pull one over on an unsuspecting recruit. More and more, these potential mary Kay recruits are going to consult the internet before making a decision and signing on the dotted line. Yahoooooo!
Here’s the latest information making the rounds in Mary Kay on how to work with Generation Y.
Dacia – Studies show that the core thing for young people in the 60s and 70s was to raise their children to have what they want and be pampered children. Today however the core thing for young adults is to live a valuable, meaningful life – to be significant.
What are the best practices?
Initially my age held me back – I did not feel experienced enough or that anyone would listen to me. But I decided to use my energy and enthusiasm to attract women and it worked! I believe that Gen Y is eager, not afraid to work hard and they are results oriented and want results quickly.
Regina – When I was first intervierwed about MK before I bought my beauty case, she told me how you make money by recruiting. She asked me to list five people who would be good. We expected people to be a Sr Consultant the first month – win the Pearls. We have gotten away from that. I have gone back to it now.
Dacia – Gen Y want to see results quickly! If she gets results right away, she is more likely to stay – she has to make money right away. A new consultant told everybody when she started that she was going to do one on one facials. If she saw more people at a time she could make more money but — You just paint the picture but let them make their goals – show them and let them decide – how they want to do it.
Gen Y wants to SEE the income that is possible – show them the Applause – and your weekly sales.
Regina – Mary Kay would always talk to the Hostess right away – and showed them the sales from the class.
Dacia – Gen Y want to feel personally empowered with info to make their own decisions. The more you push them, the more they will run the other way. Show them the distinctiveness of this career – that is the drawing card of MK!
They want to know how to win prizes, and how to make money in a short time. They are interested in loyalty and family – show pictures – show a step by step plan from day one.
The company is 45 years old – we think everybody knows about MK but they do not. We have to get back to the basics – show them about MK – how exceptional it is!
We do not want anyone to beg us. We will decide when we have the info. We want exceptional things – we are intercompetetive – we challenge and compete with ourselves – we are eager and we are excited and have energy!
Regina – If she had a $300 week, do you think you could sell $600 and make twice the money and you will be able to walk across the stage and get your diamond ring?
Dacia – Research shows that young people have 4 main goals:
- Doing good in community
- Simplifiying their lives
- Getting things in order
- Leaving a legacy
How do we get this Gen Y to come to events? You must arouse curiosity and captivate them with something relevant and exciting. I have always tried to tell my MK story – what is relevent today is how to make money? If I invest money will I make money?!
Gen Y wants to live a fine lifestyle and make a difference. I tell them that if they want to move up to the top quickly, they will have to live a life out of balance for a while and then they can run hard and have all they want forever! They may not be willing to do that right now and be on the fast track – if they have children or a life where they just feel they cannot do it that way now and be on the fast track – they may be willing to work 25 hours a week and earn a Cadillac though. There has to be a NEED – and they have to be clear on what they really want.
My first Million Dollar year I barely took a day off the entire year. My second Milion Dollar year, I took the weekends off. It was worth it!
I layered my Mother in law for a long time – she finally decided to be a National when she realized that she could have financial security for the future – made it worthwhile to do the work.
So many people are so busy but doing nothing that will provide anything for the future. Many things seem important but really are not in the long run.
What do you see is important to understand for Gen Y?
Dacia – Need results quickly. Must be willing to work hard to get it. In New Consultant Orientation, I show the entire big picture first. Then when I meet with them personally, I show them how they can do it and make a strategy to start – they must have a plan with deadlines. I bring them to my home – casually – with cookies and lemonade.
I FIGURE OUT THEIR LONG TERM GOAL FIRST AND THEN THEIR SHORT TERM GOAL SO THAT THEY KNOW WHY THEY ARE DOING IT – AND THEY KNOW WHAT TO DO TO GET THERE – THEY HAVE A STRATEGY FROM THE BEGINNING.
A woman sold her insurance business – needs to make this work – needs a car – I gave her a step by step plan with a deadline on exactly how to get that car and when – with pictures. Pictures kept me going – I wanted freedom and time to be with my children (that I did not even have yet) Was my goal always to be a National? No – I just wanted supplemental income at first.
What options do you think you are providing for yourself and your family for your future?
Lack of focus and lack of self discipline are the things that can hold you back! DISCIPLINE AND FOCUS ARE THE TWO THINGS THAT GAVE ME WINGS TO FLY!! TWO THINGS THAT HOLD ANYONE BACK AT ANY AGE IS SELF DISCIPLINE AND MONEY MANAGEMENT! HOW DO YOU GET THEM TO BE DISCIPLINED? KEEPING BIG GOALS IN FRONT OF THEM!
IT IS NOT A HARD BUSINESS – BUT YOU HAVE TO WORK EVERY SINGLE DAY! IMAGINE NOT MAKING YOUR GOALS AND HOW BAD IT WILL FEEL! THINK ABOUT HOW GREAT IT IS TO HAVE THE LIFE YOU REALLY WANT!
