Failure in MLM

Coronavirus (COVID-19) at Mary Kay Headquarters

One Mary Kay Cosmetics employee has already tested positive for COVID-19. No word on others, and the employee with the presumptive positive test has not been identified. At a corporate level, Mary Kay Inc. is attempting some steps to limit contact between employees because of Coronavirus concerns.

Employees at the Dallas headquarters have been placed into three groups (A, B, and C). Group A is to come into work on Monday and Thursday. The other groups come in on their assigned days. The plan has not yet been deployed, but employees are being encouraged to voluntarily work from home. Meetings are to be conducted via web platforms, and management says they’re testing their systems with all the extra remote activity.

But the system is already failing. Employees have been unable to log into meetings because there is not enough bandwidth in the system to allow so many employees to log in at once. MK has a Disaster Recovery Team, but it’s apparently a mess with poor communication and systems that aren’t set up properly. The business continuity plan is poor, and management has been slow to respond to problems.

Employees at Mary Kay headquarters are in a mild panic. Leadership isn’t saying much, and what they are saying isn’t helping.

Stay tuned.

    • Yes, they are using systems that are similar to Skype. The problem is that they have to go in through the corporate portal first, and there isn’t enough bandwidth to accommodate everyone who is external.

  1. Why am I not surprised. “MK has a Disaster Recovery Team, but it’s apparently a mess with poor communication and systems that aren’t set up properly. The business continuity plan is poor, and management has been slow to respond to problems.” Any company that is built on encouraging fake positivity and never looking at the facts in one sector is going to find that the fantasy leaks into the rest of the business.

  2. But, if they’d sell more Basic skin care sets or Gold Medal, they’d have the money to buy more bandwidth.

(Said in tone of all Career Conference Director speeches.)

      • “YOU decide how much bandwidth you want to have.” They’d have plenty of bandwidth if there weren’t so much negativity clogging it up. Sheesh, don’t they listen to their own sure-fire principles for success?

Seriously, though, their obvious inability to effectively handle a crisis like this just shines a spotlight on how poorly this company is run. It just goes to show that when your entire business model is a steaming pile of garbage, what rises to the top isn’t necessarily cream.

    • “But the system is already failing. Employees have been unable to log into meetings because there is not enough bandwidth in the system to allow so many employees to log in at once.”

Pffft. Those employees are so negative. They just need to have faith that the system works.

Yes lurkers, my statement makes zero sense and sounds ridiculous. But, doesn’t it sound familiar?

      • Sports have shut down, conventions have shut down, concerts, schools , churches and on and on. The Mary Kay company’s decision to cancel career conference was a correct one. No one was ready for these business problems to present and Mary Kay corporate is not the only company struggling to manage through this pandemic. For you to continue and constantly berate Mary Kay Cosmetics is not only petty but un -American. The workers at the corporate offices and manufacturing plants are people-Americans – many with families. How about just once try being supportive and pray for these poor people and hope all of this passes for all of us. Then, you can go back to slamming and hating Mary Kay Cosmetics as usual. And no I am not a consultant, just a concerned American citizen.

        • Cheryl – I don’t think anyone thinks it was the wrong decision to cancel Career Conference. However, that doesn’t change the fact that Mary Kay runs a disgusting pyramid scheme. For that reason alone, we will continue to talk about them and their representatives. I do not pray for Mary Kay or anything about its scheme. I wish no harm to come to anyone involved in the company, but I do not pray that the company continues to exist and continues to perpetuate its evil.

        • I’m not sure if you were addressing my post, but if you were, you missed the message.

I mockingly described what Mary Kay consultants do everyday to other consultants who were scammed and lost money. Current consultants are not supportive of the victims who leave, as they call them negative people who didn’t follow the system. I was showing them just how absurd that assertion is!

Perhaps as a “concerned American citizen”, you can also apply that concern to everyday life and stop scammers as well. Call people out when the scammers suggest their victims are negative. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but with this awful virus, MLMers are out scamming in full force.

  3. They (corporate men and token women) are normally clustered together and fits my usual envisions of fat cat meetings as over the top excuse for binging on food imbibement etc. Investing in backbone infrastructure as purchasing systems that provide enough bandwidth for offsite VPN style meetings is like – DUH.
But when corporate depends on narcissistic women such as all NSDs, etc, the foresight and in depth criteria to steer MK is lacking, Hey sales force we will just use Gloria M. as our bandwidth, and other “notorious” NSDs. Truly a legend in their own minds.

    corporate:
Please consider shutting the damn thing down, we are tired of desperate whiny MK people, including corporate tactics, such as down playing recent events in you realm. Consider cutting you losses now, the Dacias’ are outsmarting you!

  4. Most large companies have a disaster recovery plan or business continuity plan and many (including mine) is struggling with how to rapidly get people up and going to work from home and get through any portals, security, etc.

    • Were there not so much recent history of MK corporate making one bonehead move after another, we might give them a pass on these recent difficulties. Page back a few articles and read how they handled the shutdown of Australia and New Zealand. MK had been in Australia for nearly 50 YEARS, and for most of the consultants and directors there, the first they knew of the shutdown was when they were locked out of their own accounts.

I wouldn’t trust any if the C-level idiots at Mary Kay to deliver me a pizza, let alone put them in charge of anything.

  5. Doesn’t surprise me that their disaster plan is not working smoothly… they aren’t pro-active in their approach to business. What will be very interesting to watch is how the sales force stats will be spun. Isn’t March supposed to be another double credit month? If most people are told to “self-isolate”.. so how will they continue working? How will they spin this? How will they motivate the sales force since the virus situation is so volatile? This could very well be the beginning of the end for MK.. no events to motivate.. people will be wary of going to meetings due to the spread of the virus, etc. this could last weeks/ months… this could get very interesting.

  6. The poor response is due to their horrific HR ‘leader’ Melinda and criminally ambitious Légal lead Julia.
