How to Become a Mary Kay NSD

Almost no one gets to the status of national sales director in Mary Kay. No matter how hard a director works, her chances of gathering the number of women needed to get to national are extremely low. It’s a system designed for women to fail.

As with most of the “advice” in Mary Kay, this piece is thin on substance. It essentially says that you can get to NSD by asking enough women to join you in MK. Make them feel special. It feels manipulative. And there is nothing here that will actually help you advance in Mary Kay.

Everyone who becomes a National Sales Director had to start at the beginning, right where you are now. A lot of the success you will have comes from gathering team members, and inspiring others to follow YOU!

Here are some words that will help you!

“I have decided to go to the TOP of this company, and I will be promoting 10 women into management. I want to take you with me. There are two tracks in Mary Kay. One is the Selling Track, which I am sure you are familiar. But we also have the Leadership Track, for Directors. That is where I see you. You would be a great Director. Somehow I just don’t think that the Selling Track is enough to hold your interest, or am I wrong?….:

“Great, let’s get you a kit. Do you want it shipped to your house or to work?”

“Great, let’s get you a kit. Do you want to pay for it with a check or creditcard?”

These are my very favorite closes, because it ASSUMES the close, instead of saying, “Is there any reason why we can’t send in your agreement today?” ( “yes, major fear!)

If you ask enough people, you will have all the team members you need. But what’s more, with the above technique, you will have people who will be selling and recruiting because they want to be Directors too. That is how you build a strong group!

Ask God to bless your business, and He will. He will put the right people in your path.

Oh, and make sure your own mother is a retiring NSD and check your morals at the door.

““I have decided to go to the TOP of this company, and I will be promoting 10 women into management. I want to take you with me.”

Ego much? And because of how the MLM structure works, you can’t promote anyone. It’s your downline who promotes YOU, and you can only rise as far as their credit cards will take you. Right, Jamie?

“Great, let’s get you a kit. Do you want it shipped to your house or to work?”

Cynical me can’t decide whether this is to avoid the husbandly “You spent $100 on WHAT??” or so one can start facialling one’s coworkers immediately. Either way, the husband is going to find out and the coworkers will suddenly have a lot of urgent meetings and reports to finish up.

“But what’s more, with the above technique, you will have people who will be selling and recruiting because they want to be Directors too. That is how you build a strong group!”

The problem with building an ambitious team is that they will use you as long as you’re useful, then leave their footprints on your face. Everyone is competing for the same small and shrinking customer/recruitment base and there’s no room for loyalty there.

“Ask God to bless your business, and He will. He will put the right people in your path.”

If you’re religious, you know that it’s impossible to know the mind of God, and what he wants for you isn’t going to be the same thing you want him to want. If you’re not, it’s just hot air.

I personally believe you can learn something from every person you meet. Unfortunately, the lesson that some teach you is that people can be cruel, dishonest, deceitful, and malicious.

Kindly show me all the women who made it to NSD by sales alone.

    • “Great, let’s get you a kit. Do you want it shipped to your house or to work?”

This is an old selling technique; with this question, you imply she has already accepted to buy (subscribe), and she can just choose where to ship the goods, but the main decision is already taken for her.

    …who frontload and recruit.

Notice no mention of the need to sell anything to outside customers. In any other business, your team size is defined by the market need. If you don’t have enough sales people to keep up with customer demand, you add more. Add too many sales people and no one can make any money, so you let some go.

In MLM there is no customer demand. The only reason you add members to the team is they are your actual revenue source…especially since there is very little retailing of the product.

What OP means to say, “You need to recruit ladies who have the means to order (front load) at least $600, but preferably $1000 or more, and these same ladies will be asked to recruit others to do the same, and so on. Selling is not for your team. All of your efforts should be centered around recruiting and ordering. Every party you host should be centered around growing your team.

You and your team will never turn a profit selling product. Don’t waste your time trying. Recruit and get big initial orders, and teach your recruits to recruit in kind. That’s the path to success.”

  4. Be sure to marry someone with a high salary, come from a wealthy family, or have a prominent role in your church. A pastor’s wife in a prosperity gospel church is a good start, with a bonus if you or he comes from moneyed ancestors.
Exaggerate your credentials, even if you have to create your own college to grant that high-faluting degree.

  5. Ignore the rumors of then-Kimberly Walker Roop and her dad’s garage full of MK boxes as she was debuting as an NSD, one of the “fastest” to make it to NSD.

Have a momma like Linda, Connie, or Gloria, so you don’t have to work as hard. Plus they get to keep their fingers in the proverbial MK pie.

  6. So – why don’t I see NSD commissions published in “Applause” anymore? Am I looking in the wrong place? Can someone provide a link to the current “Applause” that shows NSD commissions?

    • In order to view any commissions in Applause, I believe you have to be logged in to InTouch. They went from publishing a print magazine with all of the seminar area (Diamond, Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby) commissions to online with only your seminar area to including the recognition only under the ‘protection’ of InTouch. MKC got tired of sites like PT calling out the lack of real income.

    • “So – why don’t I see NSD commissions published in “Applause” anymore?”

Probably because it advertises how much their pyramid schemers….who front-load products to people they endlessly sell the fake sales opportunity to….make in commissions.

  7. Find an unsaturated market…countries in South America and Europe. Being multi-lingual is huge advantage.

Develop special business relationships with people who can help you “move” your MK inventories…e.g., to non-MK countries.

You just need to be creative. Wink-wink.
