Debt and Deceit as a Mary Kay Director

This is the story of a Mary Kay sales director with a relatively short MK “career,” but very large debt when she quit. It’s so easy to quickly fall into the trap.

A couple of years ago I reached director level after a little less than a year in Mary Kay. I was a director for 6 months before I was terminated, after an extension for not meeting Quota.

I had been unemployed for 2 years when I started MK. I met a wife of one of my volunteer buddies that was on a board with me.

I depleted $20,000 from my no tax IRA paying off credit cards, I had about another $18,000 in credit card debt that I had to work on little by little. I earned my first car as a consultant in April and debuted as a director on Seminar stage in July. I sold my car that was paid off and when they picked up my Mary Kay car, I was left with nothing to drive.

I got about $9,000 back from returning inventory and that all went toward my credit card bill. I had given my credit card to my sales director and she placed orders under inactive consultants. I don’t think I realized what we were doing. I have watched an NSD and very high level director do unethical things in regard to recruiting and inventory purchases by the recruits.

I believe the company turns a blind eye and probably knows all this goes on but I think they are so smart as to not get caught.

  1. It’s not that the company is smart – its the weasel worded contract that everyone has to sign which states that you’re a contracted reseller of product, not an employee. So when someone gets up to something hinky they get to shrug and say “oh, dear me, but we have no control over what our independent contractors might do”. So they come out of it unscathed and you’re screwed.

I hope today’s correspondent’s financial recovery goes fast and smooth. Not to mention the emotional one.

    • I will have to agree with this article, I came into Mary Kay Canada in Nov 2001 , I started with the $600 dollar inventory kit , sold that kit 3 times and making money , however when my Sales Director started telling me about sales director looked very attractive…. To make a long story short … I went into much debt … putting orders under agents so I could get my Director position that how we all got coach by upline upline . So be careful make sure if you want to move up dont get yourself into debt . Re evaluate where you are. When I left MK I was $13,000 dollars in bebt and also with no car . Because the lease expire I should of taken the cash. The company and products are great … but unfortunately it comes to a point of how you can control the actions of others 🙁

  2. “I had been unemployed for 2 years when I started MK.”

These MLM vultures anger me the most…targeting the most vulnerable among us.

  3. The company is smart…but in a sinister way, not the benevolent way they present. Their only defense against those of us who recognize it is to call us “bitter” or “quitters” or any other number of names.

Here’s the truth: if your only defense is insults, then you have no defense.

We see you, Mary Kay. We see you for what you truly are. So go ahead and keep making false promises to your consultants who are worried about Pink Truth, go ahead and lie to them that “we have legal looking into it”.

If you’re such a “Godly” company, put your money where your mouth is and penalize directors who act like this poster’s did, taking credit card numbers and running up consultants’ debt for their own gain.

  4. Anonymouse, thank you for so simply defining what I have struggled to spit out all my life.

IF YOUR ONLY DEFENSE IS INSULTS, YOU HAVE NO DEFENSE.

If slurs are your only defense, you are not offended, you are many things, but offended isn’t one of them.

I am so sorry for all the victims who live this story. I truly come to tears, she was unemployed and then mkrap came stealing.
